Do you know how AMAZING it was to see them WORKING TOGETHER this way though?
This was like an extension of Hunteri Heroici - Dean giving advice, Cas listening.
Like in HH Cas made his own choice about what he wanted to do in life - before it was being a hunter, here it’s shutting himself and the other angels in Heaven in order to try and rebuild his home. And like in HH Dean makes the choice to support Cas in his choice and help him through it.
Because, like Dean says, he didn’t HAVE to help Cas close Heaven - what was important to Dean was closing Hell, the benefits to Dean of closing Heaven were minimal. The way I see it, he chose to help Cas FOR CAS more than for himself. Something he’s been doing throughout this season - in HH and also when he agreed to help Cas save Samandriel and even when he was trying to break Cas out of his mind control. Dean’s attitude to Cas all season has been care for Cas IN AND OF HIMSELF, not as a tool, not as a weapon, just AS CAS.
It’s character development and relationship development all rolled into one and, oh <3
It stings that ultimately Cas’ choice (which came down to trusting Metatron over Naomi) was WRONG in the end. Because it’s another example of Cas screwing up, isn’t it? Of him letting his family down (all the Sam and Cas parallels there).
But at the same time I was SO HAPPY with how it went down. Because when it came to the point where Dean and Cas disagreed on how to proceed. When Dean chose to believe Naomi and Cas chose to believe Metatron - there was no ultimatum between them, this was NOT a repeat of S06, they were not at odds. Instead they were able to split up and make their choices independent of each other.
Dean sacrificed his mission. And saved his brother as a result.
Cas pushed on with his mission. And sacrificed his family as a result.
Choices and consequences they will both have to deal with. But ones that do NOT affect their personal relationship with each other.
What happened allowed Dean and Cas, and will continue to allow them both, to develop as INDIVIDUALS. It gave them independence from each other. While simultaneously developing, and I’d say even strengthening, their relationship.
